About the Panhellenic Council
|
|
The Old Dominion University Panhellenic Council (PHC) serves as the governing body for the five national sororities on campus. The PHC at ODU is a part of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) which supports our sororities by promoting values, education, leadership, friendships, cooperation and citizenship. The Panhellenic women work together to unite sororities, to focus on common goals and to create a network of support for chapters and members. We provide many interactive programs for
sorority women as well as for all ODU students.
The PHC annually works with the Interfraternity Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council to sponsor many educational and fun events, including a variety of speakers, conferences and many diverse leadership programs. Every sorority woman is a member of PHC immediately upon pledging. Two delegates from each chapter serve on the council, while officers are elected from the different chapters to plan and support Panhellenic associated activities.

Why Join a Sorority?

Greek life provides it's members with lifelong friendships, a home away from home, networking, leadership development, service and social activities.
The Four Pillars of Greek Life
1. Scholarship
Greek chapters strive for the development of academic excellence among their entire membership. All chapters require a minimum grade point average for potential members to be considered for membership. Initiated members must also continue to meet the minimum GPA requirements of their chapter in order to remain a member. To assure that members are academically successful, chapters provide tutoring, study halls, awards and scholarships. Studies show that being in a Greek organization ensures a higher likelihood of graduation compared with students who are not involved.
2. Friendship
Sororities build a bond of sisterhood unmatched by any other student organization. Each chapter has its own social calendars, which typically include formals, sisterhood events, teacher luncheons and chapter dinners. Some of these social events are Greek community events, which include Greek Week, diversity workshops, alcohol awareness speakers, as well as attendance at Monarch basketball games and displays of Greek pride. Each chapter follows a risk management policy from its headquarters, the ODU Panhellenic Council and also abides by all of the rules of Old Dominion University.
3. Leadership
Greek life offers women a variety of leadership opportunities. Sorority women can be found in the Student Government Association, on the Student Activities Council and as recipients of academic and leadership awards. Members can also participate in their chapters as an officer or as a member of the committees each chapter maintains. ODU has over 200 student organizations, and for members to achieve a well-rounded education, sororities encourage active participation in a variety of leadership experiences.
4. Service
Service to the community is considered a top priority at Old Dominion University. In addition to community service, chapters sponsor a variety of philanthropic events for both national and local charities. Individual chapter philanthropies include Adopt-A-Street, events for the hearing and speech impaired and annual book drives. Chapters also come together as an ODU Greek community to participate in group philanthropic events. These events include Relay for Life, blood drives, park cleanups and many more. These activities allow chapters to have fun while benefiting the community. Service also enables young adults to grow as civic-minded leaders.

The Importance of Philanthropy
|
|
Service to the community is considered a top priority among ODU Greeks. Along with community service, sororities plan and sponsor various philanthropy events for national and local charities. The ODU Greek community heavily influences events such as Relay for Life, blood drives and road cleanups. We believe service is a milestone in the development of character and leadership.
